General FAQ

What is a solar PV system?

A solar photovoltaic (PV) system converts sunlight into electricity using solar panels. The electricity generated can be used to power your home, business, or industrial facility, reducing your reliance on the grid and lowering electricity bills.

How does a grid-connected solar system work?

A grid-connected (on-grid) system allows your solar panels to produce electricity during the day. The energy is used immediately to power your property.

Any excess electricity is exported to the TNB grid through the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, allowing you to earn credits that offset your monthly bill.

What is NEM (Net Energy Metering)?

NEM is a government initiative by the Energy Commission (ST) and SEDA Malaysia that allows solar users to export surplus energy to the national grid.

You’ll receive credits on your TNB bill at the same rate you buy electricity. This makes your solar investment more cost-effective and sustainable.

What is the Solar ATAP programme?

The Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (ATAP) is an upcoming enhancement to NEM, designed to make solar adoption even more attractive.

Guidelines and registration for Solar ATAP will be available on 1 December 2025 via the Energy Commission (ST) and SEDA Malaysia websites.

What are the main benefits of installing a solar system?

Lower electricity bills – Generate your own power and reduce dependence on TNB.
Government incentives – Benefit from NEM or Solar ATAP programmes.
Increase property value – Solar-ready buildings are more attractive to buyers.
Environmental impact – Reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to a greener Malaysia.
Long-term savings – Typical payback period is 4–6 years, with 25+ years of system lifespan.

How much does a solar system cost in Malaysia?

Costs vary based on system size, location, and roof type.

As a rough estimate:
Residential: RM12,000 – RM35,000 (3–10 kWp)
Commercial: RM60,000 – RM300,000 (15–100 kWp)
Industrial: RM300,000+ (above 100 kWp)

How long does it take to install a solar system?

The full process usually takes 4 to 8 weeks, depending on project size and approval timelines:
Site survey & proposal
Design & quotation
Application to SEDA/TNB (NEM approval)
Installation & testing
Final inspection & system commissioning
Solar Wise Energy handles all paperwork and approvals for a smooth experience.

Is maintenance required for solar panels?

Solar panels are low-maintenance, with no moving parts. We recommend cleaning them 2–3 times per year to remove dust and debris.

We also offer maintenance packages and system performance monitoring to ensure maximum efficiency.

Technical FAQ

What happens if it’s cloudy or raining?

Solar panels still generate electricity during cloudy days, though at a lower output (typically 10–30% of normal).

Your property remains connected to TNB, so you’ll automatically draw power from the grid when solar output is low.

What happens at night?

At night, solar panels don’t produce electricity. You’ll use power from TNB.

However, if you install a battery storage system, you can store excess daytime solar energy and use it at night for greater independence.

Do I need approval from SEDA or TNB?

Yes. For grid-connected systems under NEM or Solar ATAP, approval from SEDA Malaysia and TNB is required.

Solar Wise Energy manages the entire process — including submission, documentation, and inspection — on your behalf.

How long is the warranty for solar panels and inverters?

Most quality solar panels come with:
25-year performance warranty (guaranteed efficien
cy over time) 10–12-year product warranty
Inverters typically carry a 5–10-year warranty, extendable with service packages.

We only work with Tier 1 solar brands for long-term reliability.

Can I expand my solar system later?

Yes. Many systems can be upgraded by adding more panels or a battery system, depending on your inverter capacity and TNB approval.

Our team can assess your roof space and system design to ensure easy scalability.

What happens during a power outage?

Standard grid-connected systems shut down automatically for safety reasons (to protect TNB technicians).

However, with a hybrid or battery system, your solar power can continue supplying your home or business during blackouts.

Is financing available for solar installation?

Yes. You can choose:
Outright purchase – Pay once and enjoy full ownership.
Bank financing / solar loans – Offered by major banks in Malaysia.
Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) – Pay only for the energy you use with no upfront cost (for commercial/industrial clients).

Solar Wise Energy can help you explore the best financing options for your project.
